The Opal Story

This is a boulder opal from Queensland and the colour it carries is full spectrum and relentless. Sweeping bands of teal and aqua roll across the upper face like weather moving across open sky. Then the pink starts. Vivid, saturated bursts of crimson and orange fire scattered through the middle of the stone, catching the light like embers. Gold and green weave through it all, and flashes of violet appear and disappear depending on how you hold it.

The ironstone matrix is visible in patches through the lower half, raw and warm brown, a reminder of where this stone came from and how long it took to get here. Boulder opals form when silica rich water seeps into cracks in ancient ironstone boulders in outback Queensland. Over millions of years, the silica hardens into opal inside the rock, creating thin, vivid layers that carry colour unlike anything else on earth. The ironstone isn't a flaw. It's the foundation. It's what makes the colour possible.

The shape of this one is something else entirely. Long, tapered, coming to a point at one end like a blade or a wing. It is not a standard cut. It is exactly what the stone wanted to be.

Design Possibilities

A stone with this much presence and this unusual a shape calls for something considered. It would work beautifully as a statement pendant, worn long where the full length of it can be seen and the colour can shift with every movement. As a ring it would be a serious statement piece, running dramatically along the finger, the kind of thing people ask about before they even say hello.

What's Included

This opal comes finished as a hand fabricated bezel set ring or pendant in sterling silver. The bezel is hand filed to follow the exact curves and taper of this stone, wrapping it securely while keeping the full face of that extraordinary colour visible. Every piece is polished to a high shine finish before it leaves the bench.

Please Note

This opal has been photographed in both light and shade to give you a good representation of the colour, but opals are natural stones and the play of colour may vary slightly from what you see in the photos.
