The Opal Story

This one looks like a firework went off inside the earth.

This is a pipe opal from Queensland, wide and softly triangular, with a warm orangey violet base tone that glows from beneath the opal layer like something lit from within.

Vivid electric green blazes across the upper face in sharp, fibrous bursts, bright and almost neon in its intensity, the kind of green that does not look real until you are holding it. Yellow green bleeds into it, warm and luminous, spreading across the surface in fine directional lines that give the colour a texture, almost like grass, almost like flame. Violet and pink shimmer through the middle and lower face, softer and more diffuse, sitting beneath the green like a second layer of colour underneath the first, visible only when the light catches them at the right angle.

Design Possibilities

Worn on the finger, the full face of the stone is on show, and the green will fire differently in every light throughout the day. In morning light it will glow warm and amber. In direct sun the electric green will blaze. In low evening light the violet and pink will come forward.

It would also work beautifully as a pendant at the collarbone, where the triangular shape sits with real presence and the colour shifts with every movement.

What's Included

This opal comes finished as a hand fabricated bezel set ring or pendant in sterling silver. The bezel is hand filed to follow the exact curves and edges of this stone, wrapping it securely while keeping the full face of that extraordinary colour completely visible. Every piece is polished to a high shine finish before it leaves the bench.
